English Language Learner Department of PS 79M

The Department of English Language Learners of PS 79M- Dr. Horan School provides our students with a rigorous learning environment that is structured to increase opportunities for communication and acquisition of academics and skills readiness of students with severe multiple challenges, Autism, and intellectual disabilities whose primary language is that other than English.
We currently have in place two programs that support the achievement of our English Language Learners (ELL):

  • Transistional Bilinigual Education (TBE) in Spanish:  Our TBE program is designed to develop conceptual skills in the students' native language as they learn English.  A transistional bilingual education program includes components of ESL as well as content area instuction in both the native language and English.  TBE programs include Native Language Arts (NLA) that is designed to develop communication and academic skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the students' native language. 

  • Freestanding English as a Second Language (ESL):  Our ESL program is designed to provide instuction in English, emphasizing English language acquisition.  Students in Freestanding ESL programs come from many different native languages.  Content is infused with ESL strategies such as; Total Physical Response (TPR), The Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach (CALLA), The Whole Language Language Approach, The Natural Approach, and The Language Experience Approach (LEA).
